Pimelia Ferruginea
Rice Flower is a WA native with one of the most spectacular spring flowering events of any compact shrub - the plant covers itself so completely in clusters of deep pink flowers that the foliage is almost entirely hidden. The flowers are small individually but massed in dense, rounded heads that pack tightly together, creating an effect more like a flowering ball than a standard shrub in flower. It grows to around 1m and flowers in spring, typically for four to six weeks. Full sun. Sandy, well-drained soil. Phosphorus-free fertiliser. Drought tolerant once established. Tip-prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape.
