Native to Africa and Madagascar, aloes are among the best-performing drought-tolerant plants for Perth's hot, dry summers. They range from compact rosette forms to substantial sculptural specimens, produce striking tubular flower spikes in red, orange, and yellow that attract birds, and are genuinely almost indestructible once established. Perth's sandy, well-drained soils suit them naturally. Full sun to part shade. Excellent drainage essential. Water sparingly - allow to dry completely between waterings. Minimal fertiliser.
